Over-the-counter whitening can be beneficial, especially because it can whiten the teeth one or more shades. However, there are also side effects that come along with the treatments, and our dentists, Drs. Roberts and Nuttall, would like to tell you all about them so you know exactly what to expect and so you can properly care for your smile. Although over-the-counter whitening can be successful, the following things can happen:
-Tooth sensitivity: Some people are sensitive to the active ingredient of whitening treatments, which is typically hydrogen peroxide. When the treatment is used, it can open the pathways that lead to the tooth nerves, which makes you extremely sensitive to things like hot and cold foods and drinks. The sensitivity should only last the duration of the treatment.
-Gum irritations: If you misuse the treatment, then it can irritate the gums. When the gums are irritated, they can pull away from the base of the teeth and expose the roots. This can also contribute to the tooth sensitivity. It can also create a more unattractive smile. Once the gums have receded, they won’t grow back. The only way to treat gum recession is with certain dental treatments.
