Should You Get a Tooth-Colored Filling?

October 30, 2017

Cavities can be painful and if left untreated can lead to dangerous infections. In most cases, your dentist can solve the problem with a filling. But the type of filling that your dentist will use will be determined by the location of the cavity. For example, a filling in a back tooth will benefit from a strong amalgam or gold filling. But what about a cavity that can be easily seen by other people when you talk or smile? In that situation, you may want to talk to our dentist, Dr. Kent Nuttall about a composite filling.

Composite fillings bond directly to the surface of your tooth, but their popularity lies in the fact that the composite, which is a mixture of powdered glass and an acrylic resin, can be colored so that the filling blends in with the surface of your tooth. They take longer to place because they must be applied in layers, and each layer must be cured before the next one can be applied. This also means they are not as strong as other fillings, so they are often used for smaller cavities in teeth that do not receive a great deal of pressure.

Your dentist will polish your new filling so that it is stain-resistant. However, over time your filling will stain depending on what you eat and drink, and whether you use tobacco. To keep your filling in top shape, you should brush twice a day, floss at least once a day, and see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. Fillings do need to be replaced, and the dentist will check your filling during each visit.
